“We are all pawns in someone else’s game.”

No one knows this better than Violet Phillips. When her beloved mentor goes missing, she suspects murder, which sends her spiraling out of control and away from the stable life she has built for herself. Soon, her past will begin seeping out with a vengeance.

“I will teach you how this game is played.”

Self-destruction threatens to consume Violet when a handsome neighbor that has been watching her from afar intervenes on her behalf. Shepard Leone may be six years younger, but it does not stop him from seducing her ears as well as her heart.

“Fascinating how much life can change in twenty-four hours.”

When Violet is forced to go down a dark road into a past where she must confront the demons that nearly destroyed her, will she be unable to deviate? Struggling with the loss of her missing friend, Shepard will find a way in and reawaken desires that she thought were forever lost. But Violet never forgets that if you are not careful, distractions will be your undoing.

Elizabeth's Review

4 Stars

There is no doubting the beauty and sheer natural ability of J.L. Brooks' writing.  DISTRACTIONS has a sophistication and flow to the prose which leave me absolutely stunned over this debut author!

The author takes us through various periods of Violet Phillips' life, and when we first meet her, a good friend and teacher has gone missing. This event leads to the beginning of a downfall for Violet.  However, her young, handsome neighbor, Shepard Leone, comes to her rescue...in more ways than one.  When next we see Violet, time has passed, she has re-established herself in a new career, and the past bubbles up, trying to consume her.  We're introduced to Violet's sister and her ex-boyfriend, as well as her back-story. The one constant seems to be Shepard. He seems to find a way in when Violet needs him, and he brings her back to life.

I want to get my quibble with this book out of the way first. I mentioned the sophistication, beauty and natural ability of J.L. Brooks' writing, and, because there was such sophistication and obvious talent, it make the one thing I have a very hard time overlooking stand out all the more.  The need for contractions in dialog, in order to make conversation flow and feel authentic, cannot be overstated in my opinion. I think I understand why it happens.  But, regardless, people, real people, speak in contractions. When dialog isn't written that way, it comes off as stilted and odd.  On rare occasions it can be overlooked, but, when the rest of the writing is so eloquent...the lack sticks out like a big, red target.

Now that I have that out of the way, let me say that I don't know that I have ever been quite so impressed with the ability of a debut author before!! I cannot overstate, despite my quibble above, the remarkable talent that is J.L. Brooks. I'm still in awe of her gift with the written word.  Honestly, in my opinion, that is the true star of this book! This author will wrap you in the most luxurious and well-formed prose. And, yet, for all that, there is authenticity and reality here, as well, in her descriptions and the internal thoughts of the characters. Wow. I cannot imagine where J.L. Brooks will venture next, but I demand to come along for the ride!

Violet was an interesting, complex character that came off just slightly cold to me. I had just a little bit of trouble working up sympathy for her. But, she did keep me glued to the page!

Violet's ex-boyfriend I found thoroughly compelling, thuggish and really sexy ;-) Mmmm, Mmmm.  I'll take one of him, please!

Shepard. Shepard, Shepard, Shepard. What a lovely, loving, sexy, sweet, caring, nurturing, beautiful soul. What. A. Man.

Final thoughts? Wow. I cannot imagine where J.L. Brooks will venture next, but I demand to come along for the ride! If you're a lover of words and authors who use them remarkably well, treat yourself to DISTRACTIONS by J.L. Brooks!!

Excerpt
“I missed you, too.” My teeth grazed his stubbly chin affectionately. I did miss him. The way his blue eyes stared intensely at all times, how his subtle touches immediately calmed my harried nerves, and how he always knew what to do. The discomfort of being pressed into the stairs was a sheer annoyance compared to the buoyancy I felt inside.

A Candid Conversation With Scarlet Chastain On Writing F/F Romance

When we received an email from Scarlet Chastain with info about her upcoming release, Bella Key, I have to admit my first reaction was an immediate sense of 'this isn't a book you'd like'. I admit that this reaction was mostly based on the fact that Bella Key is a female/female love story and still out of my comfort zone. Bella Key didn't leave my mind the whole day, though, and more questions popped into my head - questions I wanted answered. I emailed Scarlet and asked her for an interview to which she very kindly agreed. I think the f/f genre is still very much unexplored. I wonder why so many heterosexual women read male/male romance but won't touch an f/f romance. Why the boom in m/m romance but not in f/f? What is it that makes women so hesitant to read an all female love story? Some of those question might still be left unanswered but most of them, Scarlet was able to answer. She also gives us some insight into writing f/f sex scenes and talks about her hopes for the genre.

Thank you, Scarlet, for agreeing to this interview! If you want to know more about Scarlet, feel free to check out her author bio and the blurb of Bella Key. If you're as curious about the f/f genre as we are, this might shed some light onto your questions. Maybe you've read f/f and have a few recommendations for us? Any comment or question is very welcome! ~Steffi

SABR: You are an established and multi-published author of m/f romance under the name Sandra Bunino. Why did you decide to ‘branch out’ and write a romance novel with a female/female love story?

Scarlet: I’ve always been a fan of f/f romantic fiction but had a difficult time finding stories written for women. Much of the books I’d found were erotica; very physical with a weak plot, character development and story. So I started writing the type of story I’d like to read. I’ve since found a great network of fabulous f/f erotic romance authors.

SABR: Does your process vary for writing a m/f love story versus a f/f?  Or, is it really just as simple as love is love, no matter the genders involved in the relationship?

Scarlet: Writing m/f versus f/f is a very different experience for me. My Bunino books are filled with Alpha heroes because I love them. I also include a lot of lust to love plot lines in my m/f stories. I find an f/f love story to be just as sexy, but in a softer form. Women are generally more intimate with each other, even in a non-sexual dynamic. I use this innate intimacy to delve deeper into the relationship.

SABR: Do you think readers have different expectation when reading an m/f novel as opposed to a f/f novel, or is it just the romance they are looking for?

Scarlet: Good question! Thinking about it from a sex scene perspective, the answer is most definitely yes, for the obvious reason: men and women have different ‘sexy bits’. Generally m/f readers love their heroes and everything that comes along with the package. ;) However from a romance point of view, a love story is a love story. Whether the starring roles are two women, two men, one of each, or a menage combination.

SABR: The popularity of the m/m genre has exploded over the last several years. What, in your opinion, can we attribute that to?  Do you feel it's possible for the same to happen with f/f?

Scarlet: I’d LOVE the same boom to happen with f/f. As long as authors continue to write quality lesbian erotic romance, yes, I think it can.

SABR: Many lovers of the m/m genre are heterosexual women but they shy away from the purely female romance novels. Why do you think that is?

Scarlet: I’ve asked myself this exaction question. Studies show straight women are turned on by same sex erotica. So, why wouldn’t hetero women love female only erotic romance? I’m in the minority. I shy away from m/m unless it’s by an author I absolutely love. When I read, I put myself into the story. I identify with the heroine and want to feel what she’s feeling. That’s a little hard to do with m/m. :)

SABR: Can you tell us a bit about what’s coming up next for you and what your hopes are for Bella Kay, your first f/f romance novel?

Scarlet: I’m excited about the reaction I’ve received so far with Bella Key. Many of my early reviews were from readers who do not normally read f/f. In fact, Bella Key was the first for a few of them. Readers seem to appreciate Bella Key is first and foremost a love story. It just happens to contain two very sexy women.

Next up is a slightly racy f/f story for an anthology edited by Leigh Ellwood called Coming Together: Girl on Girl. All proceeds will be donated to charity. I’m also working on Scarlet’s second f/f book about a European dress designer and an American IT geek girl. I hope to have it out in the fall.

Thanks for having me on Swept Away By Romance today!
